Gasp, cringe, or have a sly chuckle: Rude Britannia will certainly cause a reaction. See politicians brought down to size and the great and the good exposed; blush at the saucy postcards and laugh out loud at the slapstick fun - but watch out for that banana skin!

Put together with some the country's best-known cartoonists and comedy writers, this exhibition explores British comic art from the 1600s to the present day. Bringing together a wide array of paintings, sculptures, film and photography, as well as graphic art and comic books, the exhibition celebrates a rich history of cartooning and visual jokes.

The room on the Absurd is curated by comedian Harry Hill, and includes such diverse materials as Alice in Wonderland illustrations, David Shrigley's sculpture, and films by Edwina Ashton and Oliver Michaels . Within the Bawdy, Donald McGill's smutty seaside postcards can be seen with works by artists as different as Aubrey Beardsley, Sarah Lucas, and Grayson Perry. The rooms exploring Politics, Social Satire and Cruikshank's Victorian masterpiece The Worship of Bacchus, have been put together with Gerald Scarfe, Steve Bell, and the cartoonists from Viz. These show the power of comic art as a form of social and political commentary throughout history, from satires of Georgian society by Rowlandson and Gillray to Spitting Image's damning Thatcher puppet.

Looking at comedy that is both timeless and of-its-time, Rude Britannia contrasts contemporary artists such as Angus Fairhurst with key historical pieces, and covers everything from Hogarth to the YBAs.

The Hospital Club 100, in association with The Independent Newspaper, is a search for the most influential people in the creative and media industries, with the emphasis on current contribution and importance, not just the size of someone’s celebrity status, profile, bank balance, titles or past reputation.
Our network and panel of experts have put together their shortlist, but it’s now time to have your say about who represent the future of the creative industries. The list is unique in that it contains both emerging and established names, highlighting not only those who will be influencing Creative Britain’s immediate future, but also in the longer term.

Voting is open from the 10 - 25 June.

Please take a look at his blog for some recent images, essays and interviews:

The annual BP Portrait Award is the most prestigious portrait competition in the world, promoting the very best in contemporary portrait painting. Open to everyone over 18, this year's exhibition presents fifty-eight selected works from a record 2,177 entrants. The exhibition will include the three artists shortlisted for the Award - David Eichenberg for Tim II; Michael Gaskell for Harry and Daphne Todd for Last Portrait of Mother - as well as the BP Travel Award 2009 winner, Isobel Peachey, who travelled to Belgium and Switzerland to document people who take part in historical re-enactments.
Find out more about this year's shortlisted artists
From intimate and personal images of friends and family to revealing portraits of celebrity sitters the exhibition presents a variety of styles and approaches that together illustrate the vitality of contemporary portrait painting.
This year also sees the launch of the BP Portrait Award ‘Next Generation' project. Inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the project will extend engagement with young people around the Award. Annual Summer Schools and an interactive website will offer new opportunities for learning, inspiration and creativity through portraiture.
